Dyson V12 Detect™ Slim Vacuum Cleaner Review: Premium, Portable & Powerful

Dyson recently introduced its latest V12 Detect Slim cordless vacuum cleaner in India which is priced slightly above the last generation V11 Absolute Pro flagship and is positioned as the company’s most intelligent compact vacuum cleaner. With the new iteration, Dyson focuses on making the vacuum cleaner easier to use and adds some exciting innovations such as a laser sensor to detect fine dirt particles and a piezo sensor that analyzes and counts the dust particles as they are pulled in real time.

So, do all these tidbits add up to make a meaningful difference? Let’s answer that and more in our Dyson V12 Detect Slim Review.

Price and availability

In India, the V12 Detect Slim has an MRP of INR 58,900 and is available for INR 55,900 on Dyson’s official website.

Dyson V12 Design and Fittings

The focus of this generation was on making the v12 more convenient. It’s noticeably slimmer and lighter than the last-generation V11 Absolute Pro. The main body weighs just 1.5kg and even with the wand and cleaning heads attached, the weight stays under 2.5kg – and what this essentially means is that the V12 is quite comfortable to hold and use for long periods of time. operate.

The main cleaner housing is still shaped like a Sci-Fi blaster, but the trigger has been replaced with a one-touch button, which is again more convenient.

Dyson V12 Design and Fittings

There is a circular LCD screen on the back with a lone button to switch performance modes. The display mainly relays data from the piezoelectric sensor, charging notifications and the battery countdown.

The container has a capacity of 0.35 L and you can easily eject the collected dust with a clip at the bottom. There’s a marker on the bin that lets you know when it’s time to empty it, and if the bin fills up while cleaning, you’ll be notified to empty it. You can also remove and wash the tray and Dyson recommends that you let it dry for at least 24 hours after rinsing.

The cleaner also has a sealed 5-layer filter system to trap dust particles before expelling the air at the back.

Here are all the attachments that come in the box:

Dyson V12 Performance

Suction power is what should be high on your list of priorities when buying a vacuum cleaner. We all rightly expect a premium vacuum to be an absolute beast that can shake up and gobble up all the grime that has been slumbering for ages.

As we discussed in the previous section, the Dyson vacuum has evolved to be slimmer and more manageable. And yes, these refinements come at the cost of some suction – but thankfully not much has been compromised.

The Hyperdymium motor on the V12 Detect Slim has 11 ‘Root Cyclone’ chambers compared to the 14 chambers in the V11 Absolute Pro, but these 11 manage 150 air watts of suction, which is significantly higher than what you’d get on the most conventional vacuum cleaners.

There are three power modes that you can switch between: Eco, Auto/Med and Boost.

Dyson V12 Performance Modes

The maximum power is reserved for the Boost mode which is amazingly powerful but also completely wipes out the battery so you won’t be using it that often. In fact, it’s extremely difficult to slide the sweeper head on a heavy carpet with the mode turned on. The mode turned out to be very useful for intensive cleaning of sofas and beds.

You will mainly use the V12 Detect Slim in Auto mode, it also does very well. The V12 was able to pick up a surprising amount of dust from my carpet in automatic mode and a single swipe was usually enough while cleaning the floor.

The basic Eco mode is no slouch either and is great for cleaning curtains, table tops and other light dust.

One of the new innovations is the fluffy cleaning head with a precision angled Class 1 laser light (certified for safe use). The first time I tried this head it was in a sunlit room and the laser guidance was barely visible. And since I’m almost always done cleaning in the morning, we were willing to write this off as a gimmick. However, that is certainly not the case!

Dyson V12 Fluffy Laser Head Review

In a dark environment or under artificial light, the laser detection sensor makes it incredibly easy to detect dust particles on your floor that are otherwise invisible to the naked eye. You get that instant gratification of these disappear when you slide the fluffy clean head over. So much so that it’s easier to track your swipes, especially when cleaning the hard-to-reach places, like the bottom of a bed or couch.

In case you are concerned, the laser does not take up much battery. In auto mode, you can clean the hard floor for about 50 minutes on a full charge. We noticed that the laser light switches off automatically if you accidentally hit a hard object, such as a caster wheel or chair leg.

Dyson V12 Piezo Sensor Data

The piezo sensor can detect and quantify the dust particles you pick up. I suspect most users will overlook these stats, but they do give a user a means to objectively track exactly how much dust has entered during a given cleaning session. This gives you a clear way to know if your rug has been dirtier than usual.

It would be cool if this data could be synced to a smart app and better analyzed by activity or cleaning session. Anyway, this sensor also helps the vacuum cleaner to better optimize the automatic mode. It analyzes this data and automatically increases or decreases the suction power in automatic mode.

The conical brush is also new and the shape of this motorized head has been optimized to push pet hairs into the bin. Well, I don’t live with a fuzzy friend, so it was hard to judge the effectiveness of the hair removal, but its relatively compact size made it more suitable for cleaning car interiors.

To sum it up, the Dyson V12 Detect Slim is a champion, and that’s for the better for its high asking price. I mean it’s not a magic wand that you can just wave at your furniture to miraculously remove all the dust that has settled well in carvings, but it can very effectively suck up anything the brush heads can reach to scrub and agitate . You will see the magic when a cleaning head can be perfectly secured to a surface you are cleaning. This is easy to do for pillows, mattresses, rugs and even floors, but not always for more abstract surfaces like ceiling fans, ledges or curtains.

It should also be mentioned that this is not a wet cleaner and cannot serve as a blower.

Dyson V12 Detect Slim Review: Battery Life

It takes about 3 hours for the V12 Slim Detect to be fully charged (which is less than the 4-hour charge that Dyson claims). You can check the battery percentage by pressing the button on the LCD when the robot is connected. When the robot is in operation, it counts down how long the battery lasts so you can plan your session accordingly.

Battery Life Dyson V12

In auto mode, the V12 Detect’s battery can last from 25 minutes to 45 minutes. The mileage is longer when you clean hard floors, table tops and curtains. Demanding tasks, such as cleaning a carpet, can drain the battery in less than 30 minutes. The boost mode can only be sustained for about 6 to 8 minutes. In Eco mode where the suction is kept light, the run time can last more than an hour.

During our review, there were instances where we ran out of battery a few times during intense cleaning sessions, but on most days a full charge was more than enough. The battery is also interchangeable, but you’ll have to buy the replacement separately and at the moment there’s no word on the price and availability of the interchangeable battery for the Dyson V12 Detect Slim.

Dyson bundles a charging station with the V12 Detect Slim where you can drop it after cleaning, making it easy to make sure everything is ready when you need it

Dyson V12 Review: Verdict

All said and done, the Dyson V12 Detect Slim is a premium product that is remarkable at cleaning a variety of surfaces. It extracts powerfully, is very handy in the hand and has an LCD screen that keeps you informed of the collected dust and the remaining running time. The laser detection sensor and piezo sensors are cool additions that add value to this iteration.

Of course, if you spend the premium price of INR 55,990, you are considering robotic vacuum cleaners that require minimal cleaning effort and are usually considered good for cleaning hard floors. The Dyson V12 Slim Detect, on the other hand, is a versatile tool that can be used for more targeted and intensive cleaning throughout your home or car and will be relatively more reliable when it comes to intensive cleaning performance.
