FromSoftware’s catalog of games is synonymous with compelling narrative design and challenging combat, the latter leading to some very memorable boss battles for millions of Soulsborne players. There are simply too many exciting encounters to list among all of Miyazaki’s critically acclaimed projects. Good thing a bunch of PlayStation developers picked out some of their favorite FromSoftware bosses and talked about the combat design and spectacle of each one. Even Miyazaki joined in with the boss he’s most proud of!

A extended post The official PlayStation blog features the developers of many prominent studios, including Insomniac Games, Bluepoint Games, Naughty Dog, Bend Studio, and Santa Monica Studios. I’ve picked some quotes from these developers and listed them below. To read all submissions, visit the PS blog.

Producer Randall Lowe – Bluepoint Games

“As you enter the Lothric Chapel, the door closes and darkness engulfs the room. For me, one of the most memorable moments in games unfolded before my eyes. the dancerdangling from the merged darkness, falling down and twisting to face my character.”

Narrative lead role Joe Pettinati – Naughty Dog

“It’s a little painful to pick one boss fight from FromSoftware’s amazing catalog. The Bloodstarved Beast will always have my heart, but I have to give props to the Guardian Monkey from Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice as an experience I love to tell.”

Associate design director Anna Marsh – Firesprite

“It’s unusual to see older women in games, especially as skilled fighters, so I was a fan of Lady Butterfly even before the fight started; a tough, hyper-skilled martial artist who brings decades of experience to her former apprentice, a fight she’d rather not have, but be obliged to fight.”

President & Director Hidetaka Miyazaki – FromSoftware

“If we’re talking about a boss I’m ‘most proud of’ (to use those specific words), it would probably be the old monk from demon souls. The reason for this is that there was a lot of resistance to that design and what we were trying to do with it. But it was something I really really wanted to do.”

Elden Ring, the next highly anticipated FromSoftware title, will be released on February 25 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. visit our dedicated hub for more exclusive Elden Ring info.
